Cannot delete footer/footer box

I have searched through this forum, but have not found a solution to my
problem. The closest I have come is this thread:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/com...-office-word&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1

I'm trying to totally delete a footer that suddenly has 'taken over' my
document. I did not originally create a footer in the document, but now one
is 'showing up' - with no text in it. It has messed up my bottom margin in a
28 page document. Where there should be, or appears to be a space for
another row of text, when I click on enter, it jumps to the next page.

I worked on this document yesterday, and it was not doing that then. The
document is very slow to respond - when clicking next to text or a text box,
it "hangs", then sometimes jumps to where the cursor was prior to where I
clicked to place it.

That time of year - I am creating the exhibitor handbook for our fair. Some
of you may recall my issues with it last year.

In Word 2002 and above, if there has ever been text in a header or footer,
an empty paragraph will remain. There is no way around that short of
creating a new document (without a footer) and inserting your text in it.
But you can reduce the point size of the footer; possibly formatting it as
Hidden would be helpful as well. But if there is no footer in any section of
the document, then your best bet might be to set the footer margin to 0"
(Layout tab of Page Setup).

Note, however, that this may not be the reason your paragraph is moving to
the next page. See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/BottomLine.htm.

Aaaahh! Well, that was helpful, Suzanne, thanks! I'm working with Office
2000 Pro, but your reply could apply to this, too, right?

I tried a new document, and when I added a header, it automatically added
the footer box, too. WHY does MS do this???

At any rate, I have bookmarked that site you gave, and have gotten the
(stupid) document to behave to a point. ;-) I did make the margins of the
box smaller, which helped.

I like MS, for the most part, but really do wish it wouldn't assume things.
Just because I want a header does not mean I want a footer. ;-)

Once again, this site has been very helpful!
