cannot delete file

I have an empty file on my desktop than will not allow me to delete. the
error says that windows cannot find the file and I want to get it off my
desktop. any suggestions?

reboot in safe mode; if on XP press F8 before Windows XP screen appears

I rebooted in safe mode but still cannot delete the file. still am getting
the same error: " cannot find the source file or disk"
