cannot delete .exe files help!!

ok i somehow got 2 .exe files stuck on my desktop. when i try to delete them it says they can't be deleted they are in use by another person or program. they arn't anything i need to run windows or anything important for that matter i just want to get rid of them. does the same registry key fix i've read a few times work for this or do i have to do something else? i've got xp home

the programs may be running in your background so:
only thing i can think of is try opening task manager
and ending processes underneath the processes tab.
End the processes that may match what you are trying to
delete.

ok i managed to get rid of one of them by starting xp in safe mode, didn't show up with the admin login but they did show up under the owner login..i managed to delete 1 of the files but the other one still wouldn't delete even in safe mode

I looked through all the processes and didn't recognize anything that could be running the file or the file itself

under properties > Program > Advanced there
windows pif setting
autoexec filename: %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.N
config filename: %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG.N

not sure if that helps any.
 
well seemed to have solved my own problem. couldn't figure out why it would delete one of the files in safe mode and not the other. i restarted my computer normaly to check here for suggestions, i figured i'd try safe mode one more time just for kicks. it worked it let me delete the other file it wouldn't let me delete the first time weird but it worked

try booting the PC in SAFE mode and then delete the files.
