Cannot delete desktop icon

This is driving me bananas! I have a desktop icon that simply will not allow
me to delete it. I have tried going into the registry...all the way down the
chain to 'desktop' and it is not listed there now, but is still on my
desktop. Message I receive when trying to delete it says it can't read from
the source disk. It actually was an email that I saved to the desktop >>>
won't be doing that ever again!
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
Normally icons on the desktop are shortcuts. Did you try right click on the
icon, and see if there was a Find Target button? Is it enabled?
What shows as part of the tabs across the top?

This is another problem that keeps cropping up repeatedly in this
forum. Try using the"Utility for Deleting Invalid Files",
DelinvFile.exe, which can be downloaded (free) from
http://www.purgeie.com/delinv/index.htm
