Cannot cut / copy & paste!

I've recently been unable to copy and paste anything (text) in any
application. I'm not sure exactly when it started so I can't tell if it
was a result of anything new being installed, though I can't think of
any reason it would have started. Any ideas at all? It's extremely
frustrating.
