When you right click on the task bar > in the menu that pops up to to
toolbars, then in the second menu > check Quick Launch by clicking it. If
it's not there, please post back.

When I right click, click toolbars, then click "quick
launch" thats when I get that ugly little box w/ the x in
it thats says " cannot create toolbar"....

Make sure this folder exists:
C:\Documents and Settings\(Account name)\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
If it does not then create it and see if that works.
Otherwise you might try a system restore and see if that
works.

This one's a hot one...

I gave up and called Microsoft Support. They were stumped
and acknowledged the 'epidemic' nature of this problem
due to the flurry of recent newsgroup postings. After
working through the standard troubleshooting approaches
for nearly two hours, we were left with only one choice:
boot to the OS disk and run a repair. This did work but
was a timely fix and my toolbars are finally back.

If I EVER come across one of these adware/malware authors
I will personally behead that person and send the carcass
to Redmond in a cardboard box. These kinds of
frustrations cause untold wasting of resources in our
business and provide no value whatsoever. Any online
companies participating in partnerships with such
organizations should also be chastised. Following are two
such entities which should receive a barrage of critical
email. Feel free to write them with your explicit
expressions toward their invasive products:
(e-mail address removed) , (e-mail address removed) .
I already have and they gave me the typical excusive
response.

Good luck with YOUR O.S.

This symptom can occur if you do not have a Quick Launch folder.
If this is the problem you can resolve it by using Windows Explorer
to create a folder named "Quick Launch" (without the quotes) at the
following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

If you cannot find the Application Data folder (and subfolders)
use Folder Options to configure your computer to "display hidden
and system files". For more information search the Windows XP
Professional Help and Support Center for the words in
double-quotes and read the Suggested Topic by that title.

The following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article addresses the
issue for Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Internet
Explorer 5.0:

Else...

According to many posts by "Ramesh [MVP]", this problem may
be cause by Blazefind or any other malware (that modifies the
"Userinit" registry value). For more information use Google
Advanced Groups Search to search for:

Ramesh Userinit "Quick Launch"

For detailed removal instructions for Blazefind see the following

and services company) web site:, see:

"Welcome Back Quick Launch Toolbar!"

Ok People here goes and from what I understand this is the silver bullet to the Quick Launch gone missing dilemma

Go to: http://www.criticalnexus.com/resources/

and click on the winxp_cannot_create_toolbar.reg and download the reg file use this regedit to fix your problem and you should be set.

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

From what I'm to understand seems that adaware/search & destroy people were overzelous in their registry editing efforts and they helped to remove an essential key

Enjoy!

Wish I could take credit for this, but unfortunately I can't. Koudos to the person that found the fix! Job Well Done!
