When I try to create an Emergency Repair Diskette, I get the message "The
operation failed. The diskette is unusable." I have tried three different
1.44 MB diskettes, one of which had just been formatted from Windows
Explorer and one of which had just been formatted from a command window.
Chkdsk does not show any problems with these diskettes.

I need an ERD before installing new software so thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,

It could be that your floppy drive has a fault. Try just
writing and reading some files to the floppy and make sure
that is not the problem.

I would format the disk and keep track of the number of bad sectors.
If the format program detects a bad sector it will simply mark it as bad,
and you will end up with a disk that has a little less space than expected.
I always throw away floppies with bad sectors, and mine are pretty old
so I sometimes have to format 3 or 4 before I find a good one.

Now for guesses based on what I have seen in the past. Just guessing,
but some of those "make a boot disk" programs appear to just do
some sort of block to block copy, and may ignore the bad sector list.
I have not had much luck with them creating a bootable disk on a floppy
with bad sectors.

You may simply run out of space too.

Floppies are notorious for screwing up...
Get five of'em(southern word) ;-)
Format them on the machine you are doing ERD
Notice if any have bad sectors
Trough them away
Use one good one and try an ERD
The files are versmall

good computing,

I am having the same problem. None of the diskettes I am using have bad sectors. They are all brand new. I was able to make an ERD last month without problems. But now I can't make one at all.
