Hi all

I am having problems getting XP home to install. I put
together a new PC, with Maxtor 120gb hard drives. I
format the hard drive for NTFS, and then go on to install
setup files. Have done this many times now, and have not
gotten thru the process yet, it always stops at some file
or files saying it cannot write to disk....have tried 2
brand new hard drives now, and also my own new copy of XP
and one I just bought for my son. It always stops during
copying the files process....sometimes same file,
sometimes different ones. Please help!

If your computer contains more than one CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive,
rerun the Windows XP installation from another available CD-ROM drive.
If no additional CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive (or drives) is available,
run Setup on another computer to determine whether the Windows XP
CD-ROM is damaged.

Thanks for the fast reply Carey!

Yes I do have 1 CDRW and a DVD drive and have tried
both...have tried to use my sons copy of XP which I just
installed on his system to test...it worked on his, not on
mine....any other thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Bill,

What kind of memory are you using? XP is very picky
about the memory in comparison to 2000 or 98. Swapping
out the memory could possibly get you past the point
where it tells you it could not copy a file (wish I could
remember the name of the file). Just out of curiosity
does the installation of the setup files generally stop
around the same percentage of completion?

I am getting the exact same error. This started about 5
nights ago when I reformatted due to installing a new
motherboard and processor. (asus p4p800 deluxe, intel p4
2.8ghz 800fsb). I have installed the windows xp on my
other computer just to check to see if it still works and
it did. i have tried to install it using my dvd drive,
dvd-rw, and a cd-rw with no prevail. I have even
purchases new hard drives with no luck. I am going crazy
here. This is a copy of the error:
-----------------------------------------------
Setup cannot copy the file: *****.***
To retry, press enter

If you are installing from a CD, make sure the Windows XP
cd is in the CD Rom drive.

To Skip the file, press esc.
Caution, If you skip this file, setup may not complete
and windows XP may not work properly.

To quit setup, press F3.
---------------------------------------------------
If I skip the file then it does it with another file and
then another. If I hit enter it will continue to give me
the error. Any Ideas? Thankyou!

Bill - I have just had a similar problem with a machine i was looking
at at. I resolved the problem by removing the memory and inserting 1
stick only. This machine had 2 different types in, which might be ok
in normal use but obviously not for xp. As soon as i tried again it
worked perfectly straight away.

Ok, I believe you have the same setup as me to the tee.
I finally got mine working last night by taking 1 of the
sticks of memory out. This is good to just get windows
installed but as soon as I put it back in it made
everything very unstable. I went to bios and changed ram
settings to manual and then changed the memory voltage to
2.75 and it made it very stable. I love it. Now I still
havent tried it with both memory sticks in but i am about
to and I will post when I do. Goodluck.

Ok, the second stick of memory is in and it all looks
good. I cant change cas settings without the computer
not booting so I am leaving those at default. All I
changed to get the stability is:

Bios - Advanced - Jumper Free- AI Overclock Tuner - Manual
DRam Frequency - 400mhz
DDR Voltage - 2.75v

Thats it. rest is default right now. Good luck....

This could also be caused by bad memory.
Try substituting memory within your system.
I had this problem and thought it was the cd.
It turned out to be memory. As a tech support eng for
large US pc company have since seen the issue there as
well it was 9 out of 10 is memory failure, or more
correctly part of the mem is failing.

Good luck.
