Trying to reinstall XP Home on a Pavillion 7970. After deleting the existing partition, creating a new partition, and formatting for NTFS, the installation repeatedly hangs at "Cannot copy the file per_seg1.swf". I've run the manufacturer's HD utility and the drive is fine. I can't find anything similar in KB. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks....Steve

I've had a couple of issues like this on new builds. On occassion I have found that different files will not copy. In one case I had to replace the hard drive. In the other case, I had to change the memory.

Ken, thanks for the response

Interestingly, I ran CHKDSK with the /p switch and it discovered a HD error that had not been detected by Samsung's HUTIL utility. I'm running CHKDSK now with the /r switch in the hopes that it'll lock out a bad sector or whatever the problem is.

Would a low level format of the HD help?

What does chkdsk with the /p do?

Thank You,
Ed.

CHKDSK with the /r switch took quite some time to complete but finally did. It just said "completed" when it finished. I ran it again with the /r switch and this time it completed quickly and showed no errors

However, I am running Memtest86 and am getting thousands of errors. So this may be the problem. I'm going to open the box and see what memory modules are there. If there are two modules, I'll test each one separately.

Just an update on this.....

The problem was a bad memory module(s). I borrowed a couple of RDRAM modules from another PC and Windows XP installed without any problems.
