I can connect to the internet, but I get a server cannot
be found page on every web page I attempt to go to. Also,
when I go to outlook express, I am getting a cannot find
mail.(service provider). net. I have talked with my ISP
and they made sure my settings were correct but could not
go any further. They told me I would have to get someone
to come in and reisntall communications. Can anyone help
me with this?

until this past Saturday. There have been no additions to
hardware or software; and, to my knowledge there has been
no tinkering with the configuration. Thanks for the reply.

The symptoms suggest that DNS is not working. DNS is the Internet
process which translates names of web addresses, e.g. www.yahoo.com into
an IP address, eg. 216.109.118.67.

Run a test: go to a DOS Command box, and type "ping 216.109.118.67".

If it works, this says that your network connection is active.
If it doesn't work, then this says that your network connection is dead.

If network connection works, i.e. the ping works, then do another ping
but this time to "ping www.yahoo.com" to check DNS. If the ping works
then DNS is working. If the ping fails then it's DNS so recheck your
settings for DNS for your ISP ... this will be in the the nework
configuration (dialup, DSL, or whatever you have). Check on your ISP
web site what these server IP addresses should be. Try a ping to these
DNS servers to confirm they are active. If they are not active, then
maybe the DNS servers at ISP are having problems.

If the network connection doesn't work, i.e. the ping fails ... well,
dunno. Next steps depend fully on how you connect to network (dialup,
cable modem, DSL, etc....)

Realize this more quesions with lots of "if this then else" logic ...
but hopefully this helps.

Something changed on Saturday. The key is to find out what changed. It's
not magic. It's just a computer.

Temporarily disable any third-party "system" tools such as NSW, NIS or
anything by McAfee. Also your firewall.

1. See http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#dns

2. OE problem: Post the complete error message.
