Cannot Boot

I get the disk check due to abnormal shut down message and the disk check hangs at 50% and won't proceed. When starting in safe mode I hang also. Have tried to select the last successful option in safe mode, but that too hangs. I can't open the system to check the reason for this. Can anyone offer any advice? I have been unable to cancel or stop the disk check during the boot process. Does anyone know how I can cancel the disk check?

I'd suggest getting a disk utility from whoever the manufacturer of the hard
drive is, and running some hard drive tests. If the disk check is freezing,
you might have some sort of problem it can't get through, which is why you
aren't able to boot. The manufacturer's drive utilities might be able to get
you past the problem.
