Cannot boot

Hi All,

How can I boot my computer from a floppy disk or CD with
hard drive support? Because of registry/harddisk problems
I
cannot get my computer started. Among other error
messages
is "error 0x00000051) If I am able to boot independent of
the HD then I can run disk utilities to try
to do repairs. Important financial data is on the drive.
(Gateway P4 2.2G, Windows XP home edition)
