I had a hard drive (partially) fail in my system and in order to get the data
off of it, I installed a second hard disk on the second sata port and
installed windows xp on it. When i went to take out the first hard disc
after the other was up and running, my system fails to boot. Does anyone
know what i need to do to the new disk in order for it to boot without having
the old disk connected to the computer. I'm afraid that it is going to fail
soon and then i will not be able to start my computer.

Unfortunately you did things back to front. You should have
disconnected the old disk before installing the new version of
Windows in order to make it completely independent of the
old disk. When you left it in place, you used it as a boot disk.
Furthermore, your new system drive letter is now something
other than C:.

While it is possible to make the system boot without the failing
disk in place, the method is rather involved and your system
drive letter would always be something other than C:. The
simplest solution would be to disconnect the old disk and perform
a fresh installation of Windows on the new disk.

Move the new HD to the first (master) position on the cable ...take the old
HD completely out for now
change the master/slave pins on the back of the HD to reflect the fact that
it now the master drive
Reinstall XP as if it was a new install.........but at that last screen pick
Repair
This will repair/create the necesary boot files on the drive.
When done reboot and check.
Then shut down again and hook up the old drive as the slave drive...dont
forget those pins on the back.
When you reboot XP will detect that old drive and you can copy your work
over.....Programs will need to be reinstalled onto the new drive.

The other way would be to Clone the old drive to the new drive after you
wipe XP off it....quite a few new drives come with this software. If yours
did not look at the manufaturers website and download a copy. This makes an
exact duplicate..nothing lost.

no such thing with SATA harddrives.
