Hi all,
Tryed to turn my PC on last night and got a message saying
it cant boot because

<windows root>\system 32\hal.dll is moved/corrupt or
something along those lines.

I urgently need files from this PC

All help appreciated
Thank you

Will,
I read those articles but havnt been able to try anything
cause i'm currently at work.
But I dont think I could select to boot from CD last night
and I only have XP Cd Rom. Also when I tryed to start in
safe mode it asked me for password even though I never set
one. When I pressed return nothing happened.
When I booted from last good config all I could view was
my screen saver.
Could you give me some steps or tips to try when I get
home.

Your files are probably safe but your WinXP installation
might be cooked. To get at your files, you have various
options.

- Small files can be copied to a floppy disk, by booting
with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com, then
perhaps running ntfsdos.exe from www.sysinternals.com
to access your NTFS partition.
- Large files must be copied to a hard disk. Buy, borrow or
steal a 2 GByte hard disk, install it as a slave disk, then
use the above method to copy your files.
- The easiest way is to install your disk as a slave disk
in some other Win2000/XP PC, then copy your files
to that machine's system disk.

You should consider this event as a timely reminder that
all important files must be backed up to an indeplendent
medium once every week. This time you're unlikely to
lose anything. Next time you might lose the lot.

Hi

The default 'password' for XP Home Edition is left blank. To boot from the XP CD, you may have to change the boot order of your PC. As BIOS setups differ you will have to look in motherboard manual to see which menu you need to access. Have a look at the bottom of the screen after a reboot for a message something like 'Press X to enter setup' - where X could be the Delete key, F1, F2 etc.
