I am using Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD software and each time
I try to backup my hard drive to my CD burner the PC
freezes up (it seems to stop in the same spot each time).
I defrag, run disk cleanup, disable/turn off all programs
(including screensaver) before attempting a backup. When I
run chkdsk I get the following: ...correcting errors in
the master file table's BITMAP; Windows found problems
with the file system; Run chkdsk with the /F fix option to
correct these. However, after I run chkdsk /F, and run
chkdsk in read only mode again, I get the same error
message. Is this why I can't complete a backup? How do I
correct the problem?

What are you trying to backup, the entire system, or your data? Does that burning software tell you that you can backup the entire system? Most "backup" software can't backup the system and allow you to restore to a point in time, unless it images like Ghost or Driveimage.

Are there any sharing violations that come up?
