Hi guys, i am having a peculiar problem with office 2003. I cannot attach any documents of word or excel to my email. i tried to attach my resume to Yahoo and Hotmail email , but after trying it for a while, it comes back saying "invalid file format". When i tried to upload my resume to monstertrak, after a while, it says "page cannot be displayed". But i can attach all other files such as zip, jpg, txt. etc except for word and excel 2003. i have service packed office 2003 from microsoft's website. i have reinstalled it but still same problem. can anyone help?? thanks

This isn't a problem caused by Word or Excel.

It's a problem releated to your computer since as described it's
affecting your browser's ability to handle. My hunch is this is a
computer virus or syp-bot programmed to mess with dealing with
Word/Excel files. Check your machine.

Ask further in newsgroups dedicated to the browser you are using, or get
assistance from the an anti-virus software vendor.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

This is almost certainly a security measure to prevent you from posting
files that could carry viruses. In any case Word docs are unnecessarily
bulky - and should not be transmitted without compression.

Many companies will strip attachments anyway so if you want to be sure of
getting your resume seen, unless specifically asked for Word format include
it in the body of your message as text only.

If it were defensive security measures by Hotmail or Yahoo, wouldn't
they have reported this in an error message?

Yahoo scans uploaded DOC files when you compose the email, and
immediately reports results when the upload is completed. I don't know
what the error message is if a virus is detected since I don't seem to
ever have had a virus (knock on wood). The symptoms reported by the OP
suggests that something is blocking the upload from his/her PC.

In any event, it surely has nothing to do with Word and re-installing
Word or getting patches won't have much affect.

I suspect people who write nefarious programs like I suspect this do
this to get some sort of perverted enjoyment in making it appear as
though Microsoft's products are full of bugs and un-reliable.

It sort of did report it :)

I agree it has nothing to do with Word.

Just for the hell of it using Outlook, I e-mailed a Word doc to myself using
my hotmail account and the message arrived with the attachment intact - so
maybe my reply was a bit wide of the mark :(

I can't get past the web log-in to access Hotmail directly so I cannot test
it from there. This must be something to do with cookie control on my PC. I
find passport a nightmare to handle.

As for viruses. None has yet got past my security - but lots of attempts to
introduce them are kicked out daily, and the spammers are getting more
ingenious by the week.

gents , i appreciate you help here. i will run the virus scan to make sure there is no viruses, but i doubt it. i read your posts; i know yahoo or hotmail does let you attach word document, and montertrak also let you attach word documents. Today i will try to attach a word document from my other pc which also has office 2003 and i will see if that works. i will keep you guys updated. Again thanks for your help.

Just because anti-virus software doesn't detect anything doesn't mean
you don't have one. They aren't perfect.

Sometime this flawed with the basic system. Maybe not a virus, but
*something* caused it.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

well i found the problem!! it looks like, it was not the virus but spyware which was causing the problem. i have used "webroot spyware sweeper" to clean up all the cookies and spywares and after that it started working.

i want to thank all of you, specailly Rob schneider for his first effort to help me solve the problem. God bless you all.
