I had put the envelopes icon on the toolbar on my computer, but the computer
had to be reformatted, and now I cannot add the envelopes icon to the
toolbar. I followed the instructions, but the command cannot be dragged to
the toolbar. When I try, a box with an X appears.

Hi

What version of Word do you have? Can you add any other buttons to your
toolbar, or is it just the Envelope button that is the problem? Can you tell
us exactly what steps you are following?

It's Word 2003. I cannot add any icons to the toolbar following the
directions:

Tools/customize/commands/chose category Tools/chose command Envelopes and
Labels. When I drage the icon, there is a box with an X.

This is a little confusing, but the X shows where you cannot drop the
button. Once you hover the button over a toolbar, the button will change to
a +.

That's odd. I had no trouble adding this button to my toolbar. What toolbar
or menu are you trying to add it to?

What sort of 'reformatting' have you had done to your computer. Could it be
a misguided IT department has disabled customization for some of your
toolbars?

I don't think so. This is my home computer. An attempt to update my Nortons
screwed up my hard drive so much, it had to be reformatted. I use the
Letters & Labels feature a lot, so would like to have the icon on the toolbar
again.

I can't imagine what the problem could be; I know I had no problem adding
it. You're definitely dragging from the commands list in Tools | Customize?

Yes. When I try to drage from the command list, the X stays and nothing
happens when I let go on the toolbar.

Is this happening in a corporate/networked environment or on a personal/home
computer? If the former, it's possible that the net Nazis are preventing you
from customizing Word (always a bad idea).

It certainly sounds like the toolbars are protected but |I don't know what
would cause it on your home machine.

You could try resetting the toolbars -- Tools > Customize > Toolbars tab,
Select Standard and press Reset, and then select Formatting and press Reset.

If that doesn't help, I wonder if you have some corruption. You could try
Detect and Repair. Try deleting (or renaming) Normal.dot - but if this is a
brand new installation on a reformatted hard disk it all seems rather
unlikely.

Thank you, Tony. That worked!
