Cannot access volume control

Can someone please help me with this very annoying problem? I cannot access
the volume control from the taskbar, the icon is there but when I click on
it, even though the volume control opens, it closes very quickly so that I
can't really click on it to make any changes. No matter how I do it I cannot
reach it fast enough, it dashes away from reach so that it's not really
available to me. I have a Santa Cruz speaker system and only when I right
click on the icon and open the Santa Cruz panel control can I then make
volume changes which takes much longer. It was not like this before but I
have no idea what I may have caused this to be. I'd appreciate comments on
how to fix this.
Thanks, Josie

Start > Run: SNDVOL32.EXE
If the same thing happens, this file might be damaged. Replace that file
according to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319095/EN-US/

If this doesn't help, this may be a sound driver issue.

Thanks for your suggestions. I do have an icon in my taskbar as opposed to
what the KB article says about not having it there. When I do the Run:
SNDVOL32.EXE I get the same volume control window that I get when I double
click my taskbar icon ( I do not understand what you mena by "if it does the
same thing" because it does not disappear.
My problem is more with what happens when I SINGLE click on the icon I get a
tiny window that opens right next to the icon but it will not stay still to
allow me change the volume level or mute, it disappears very quickly when I
reach for it. If I double click I get the Santa Cruz volume control panel,
not the tiny window and if I right click I get the Santa Cruz options panel
from which I could also choose volume control.
I hope I am making myself clear. I will try replacing the file, but would
appreciate ideas about other options as well. Thanks.

I did replace the file and it did not make a difference. The volume control
I am wanting to stay "still" so I can use it before it disappears from view
is the old vertical slider type volume control mini window. I wonder if it
has something to do with the Santa Cruz speaker system, but it was OK before
so ??????. Maybe this clarification helps you or someone else help me.
Thanks again.

The problem with the 'mini window' might be caused by the software,
coming along with your speaker system (if any). As a workaround, double-
click the speaker tray icon rather than single click. Hope that helps.

If this "Santa Cruz" software will not be needed, you may want to un-
install it in order to restore the normal behaviour. See if there is
an option under Control Panel > Add/Remove Software.
