cannot access internet when switching users

I have a problem that I hope someone can help me solve.

When I switch users on my PC, the newly logged in user cannot access the
internet, and in order to gain access, I have to reboot the PC.

It doesn't seem to matter whether I log off as the previous user or whether
I do a fast switch.

How can I fix this annoying problem?

Thank you,
Mike

What kind of network/internet connection do you use?

If you have broadband, get a little consumer-grade firewall/gateway/router
so you don't have to configure anything on your workstation (such as a PPPoE
client, etc)....it's also another layer of security even if you have the
Windows firewall enabled. Nothing should then be an issue when you switch
users.

This PC is connecting to the internet via a cable modem. That connects to a
Linksys wireless router for a laptop (wireless) and another PC (wired).

Any thoughts?

Maybe I'm confused. Is it not configured as below?

----Internet/cable modem-----

-----Linksys router/WAP--------

PC PC Wireless PC

If the Ethernet-connected PCs are connected as described, there should be no
issue of connectivity failing when you switch users. Can you clarify/correct
me?

That is a good picture of the setup. But the problem still exists on PC1
(running XP Home). PC2 is not an issue since it still runs Win98 and is just
used for the kids, and the laptop is not having this issue.

Only PC1 has problems connecting to the Internet once a second user account
is logged in or when the first user is logged off and a new user is logged
on. Whenever a user logs on that is not the one that originally signed in
when the PC was booted, the Internet is not accessible nd the PC must be
rebooted for that user to gain access.

Thanks for working with me on this.

Let me know if there is anymore info I can provide that could help you.

Thanks for all of the input. I contacted the ISP and the problem seems to
have been within the modem. After making a few changes, the problem has gone
away. We will cross our fingers and hope it does not return.

Thanks again,
Mike
