I have been unable to access the following files: It does not give an error
message just does nothing...
System Information
System Restore
Help and Support
In additon, when I try the sfc/scannow I get the message "Windows can not
find sfc/scannow and suggests a search" etc. I find sfc but can not get to
it... Thanks in advance for any help

Thank you Brian, I guess I was not clear.... When I do a search, sfc.exe does
come up, but when I click on that one, there is only a flash of something
with a black background and then nothing... and it is in System32 folder...
for other sfc (SFC.EX_ and others) it tells me windows can not open that
file... I do not know what running it from a command window means. I have
tried sfc/scannow using the Run command and that's when I get it can not be
found. And when I go to accessories and try system restore and system
information nothing at all happens. When I try the Help and Support, again
nothing happens... I hope this information makes it more clear...

Sorry, I forgot to tell you that I update my anti virus and Adaware and
Spybot along with the Microsoft Anti spyware all the time and nothing has
come up from those programs.... Thanks for your time and to all of you that
take the time to help those of us with problems..

Common behavior for nastyware is replacing system files. Check for
viruses, trojans, malware.

When you say you find the file but can't get to it, what do you mean?
You can find sfc.exe in a search? Is it in WINDOWS\system32 ? Can you
run sfc from a command window with no modifier at the end? There should
only be one copy of sfc.exe and one SFC.EX_ . There is also a sfc.dll
which should also be located in WINDOWS\system32. Multiple copies of
these (I am not sure here, but they may also turn up in compressed
system restore directories, they would be listed separately in blue text
in a search), or finding them in the wrong place indicates a problem.
My hunch is a trojan. Good luck, hope this helped a little.

Ahh, I see. The sfc.exe application is not a windows program, it has to
be run from a command window. To get one up, go to Run again, and type
cmd <enter>. This will pop up one of those little black windows you
described, but it will stay there and let you enter commands. From the
command window, type sfc /scannow <enter>. You have to have the space
in there or it will get confused, I think that may have been part of
your problem before.

Let us know where that gets you.

OHHH! did not work... in fact things got hung up and I had to shut down...
Here is what happened:
Windows File Protection message "Files that are required to run etc. must be
copied to the DLL cache. Insert the Windows XP cd..."
I didn't know which one to use... the original restoration cd that came with
this Gateway, SP1 or SP2. When I tried to close the windows it wouldn't go
away!!! So I guess I am missing one of those DLL's! (whatever they are).
Never a simple problem!

Actually, that is exactly what it is supposed to do. When it asks for
the CD, use the one that corresponds to the version of the operating
system you are using now on that machine (I am assuming SP2).

Hi Brian,
Just wanted to let you know it did not work.. I first inserted SP2, it said
wrong cd, then tried SP1, again wrong cd and finally tried the restoration cd
and that also did not work. I do want to thank you for your time but I give
up.... Things seem to be running ok without those features working...
