cannot access folder in XP

Someone had asked how to recover a lost password and
associated data. It was said you could reinstall XP in a
differnt partition and take ownership or reinstall in the
same partition. Well I have reinstalled in a different
partition and still can't access my folder and I also
reinstalled in the same partition with no luck either. I
have all admisitrative rights and I can "see' the folder
I want to get into, but it says access denied everytime I
try to get into it. I am at a complete loss. When I
reinstalled in the same partition I installed in
C:\windows1 because the setup said it would rewrite and
destroy all data if I reinstalled in the same directory
C:\windows. Should I have installed it again there anyways
and if so would I lose all my data?? I was really stupid
in not backiing up my data, but I really need to get to it
so I can finish a work project. I tried to install a new
HD and transfer the data and it failed and now I am stuck.
Again I can see the folder I need to get into but XP will
not allow me to even under adminstrator rights. I know the
password needed for the folder I want in to but it won't
let me access it either. Any help you could give would be
greatly appriciated. Thanks.

Try taking owner of the folder. right click on the
folder,properties, security, advanced, ownership... If
that does not work try to repair you orginal OS by booting
to your windows CD and follow the repair instructions. If
that does not work try Install in the orginal dir. This
will overwrite the windows files but should keep your
files ok... I always make two drives and keep my files on
the second drive and keep windows files on the first, this
way you can overwrite windows without worry to your files.
