Cannot access BIOS- WHY?

I cannot access my BIOS. I have tried all the simple ways by pressing (esc,
F2, DEL, Shift, F1, ...ect...) to do it but will
not work. Are there any EXPERTS in this area? I need to get into BIOS
becasue my computer will not BOOT. It will go to MSDOS and request a
"BUILT-IN HDD PASSWORD" to which I have NO earthly Idea what it is as I never
set one.

I can only get to the Toshiba splash screen during boot and then it goes to
the HDD password MSDOS prompt.

Is the access to BIOS immediately after pressing on or farther in the
startup process?

If I could access BIOS I think I could reset the passwords. Am I wrong?

Thanks.

Try disconnecting the bios battery overnight and see if that resets the
bios.

What system is it, you only mention Toshiba.

Access to the BIOS must be done immediately after powering
ON and before Windows begins to load, you have just a few
seconds to press the correct key that is listed in the
manual for your computer. Somebody probably got into your
BIOS and set a boot password, you will need to remove the in
the BIOS.

Yep. You would still need to know the password.

You might try the bios password recovery or reset programs out on the
web. Do a search on google.

If not take the battery out for overnight. If that does not work you
will need to take it to a repair shop.

Thaks Neil- It is a Toshiba Satelite Pro 6100. Are you referring to the
small watch type battery that powers the CMOS? If so then I have taken the
keyboard off and taken all the panels on the botom off and did not see it.
However access to all components is not easy. Seems like I would have to
crack open the whole case to find that. I have been informed that not all
Laptops(especailly the newer ones) have a battery that can be removed and is
integrated into the motherboard. I have no idea if this is the case and I'm
not sure what brand of motherboard i have.

I tried to locate a drawing of the motherboard for this machine but have
come up empty. Do you know where I could find one? This notebook is approx
11/2 to 2 yrs old Running XP pro.

I welcome your suggestions and thank you.

Thanks Jim, thats what I thought and thats what I have been doing. I tried
alternating different keys and tried pressing & holding and tried multiple
pressing but the BIOS will not come up.

If the hard drive is CRASHED would I still be able to access the BIOS?

If so, this is looking more and more like a virus attack would you agree?

Thanks for your comments and suggestions!

Thanks Greg- will do. I wonder if you know if I actually have a replaceable
CMOS battery. I looked under the keyboard and tokk off the screwed panels on
the bottom but couln't find it.

I have been informed that newer laptops have the battery integrated into
the MB. This is a Toshiba Satelie Pro 6100 Approx 1 1/2 to 2 yrs old.
Would you know where to find information on what type battery? I have looked
all over Toshiba Website but cannot find anything. I think maybe these were
discontinued.

Thanks for your suggestions.

You should be able to find answers and manuals.

see http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_home

The BIOS is totally on the motherboard and can be accessed
with the hard drive removed, in fact, if the hard drive is
removed the system will normally open the BIOS since it
can't do anything else. So if you can disconnect the hard
drive.

Use the Toshiba site above and look for the users guides and
other manuals, you can find the correct procedures and
follow them.

It appears from reading the manual at the Toshiba site that you can not
access bios in the normal way.

The Hdd password indicates the the hard drive is malfuntioning. The
information was found by looking at the latest bios download for your laptop.

Good luck and hth

Start tapping Esc immediately after power-on until you get a prompt to hit
F1 to continue. Detach HDD and test the laptop, it can be motherboard
problem. Depending on Toshiba model the BIOS battery can be somewhere below
either GreyAlt/Tilde keys or top panel ribs.

And I found interesting trick in my library:

Using hex-editor, change the first five bytes of floppy diskette sector 2 to
4B 45 59 00 00 and boot the laptop from the diskette, press Enter when asked
for password and you will be asked to Set Password again.
