cancel safe mode boot

hi, how can i cancel a boot that is going on in safe mode? it has been
running for 4+ hours; control/alt/delete has no affect

Hold the power button in until the computer turns off. Then if you want
more help with the problems that caused this, post back with all

is the machine powers off during i.o activity, the opportunity to crash the
drive increases...has something changed with the 'power off' to prevent this
from happening?

No but you are caught between a rock and a hard place as your machine is
locked up, only option is as Malke says, power off.

Start | Run <type in> shutdown -s -f -t 0 <enter>
or
Push Power switch
or
Pull Power Cord
