I am trying to create a proof-of-concept experiment for Augmented reality -
when computer generated information (text, images etc) is "overlayed" onto
the realworld view. If live video could be used as the backdrop to
powerpoint then this would allow for easy rapid-prototyping in such fields

Videos in PowerPoint always play on top of everything else, so PowerPoint may
not be the best tool.

And, just out of curiousity I tried something:
Powerpoint won't let you place objects on top of video, but it will play and
let you place objects on top of animated gifs. What I found was that
PowerPoint will also accept and play an animated gif as a background. If you
can make your video into an animated gif, it'll work (probably be a monster
of a file though).
