I was wondering if there was any way you can do this. I want to be notified
of new messages without keeping it open and in the way.

No and yes. Of course WM won't operate when it's not open! But you can get
third-party notifiers that do the same - but THEY have to be running as
well! So why not just keep WM open?

The ting is that i want it off my start bar (or whatever it's called so I
don't click on it every time i switch apps.

Well, it does get it off your taskbar.
The only combination that will give you what you want is Windows
Live Mail + Windows Live Messenger.

What you are asking for, is like asking the mail man, to sneak up to your
mail box, when it is nailed down!!

Jesus wept!

Next thing that you will ask, "is can I cook a joint of beef in the oven,
during a power cut".

Get real.

funny lol

but office outlook does it so there should be some third party app or
something that can do it.

Yes there is, Google is your friend. But the point is, outlook is STILL
RUNNING, so what's the difference between keeping WM running and using a
third-party notifier which HAS TO BE RUNNING to do the same job?
