Can you open a doc done in XP in Word '97?

Sure can. It opens up just fine. No need to save it as anything special
(just *.doc).

Yes and no. The file format is the same from Word 97 through Word 2003, so
you will be able to open the file just fine. Some formatting created by new
features introduced in later versions may not be correct in Word 97. If you
want to make sure that your Word 2002 document looks the same in Word 97,
choose "Disable features introduced after Word 97" on the Save tab of Tools
| Options. You will then be warned if you try to use a feature that is
incompatible with an older version.
