2000 to install it?

in order to install windows xp home you need win 2000 or
win me. Thus you CANNOT upgrade from win 98 to win xp
home.

Does anyone know where this person with absolutely no knowledge of anything came from? He's posted 4 of the most stupid messages in history today alone, two with totally incorrect replies to other messages, and his two famous "ME is the GREATEST ever." PLONK

In that case you had best read up on the supported upgrade paths for WinXP:
i.e.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292607
Which says (in part) :-
Microsoft Windows 95
No supported upgrade paths

Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows
Millennium Edition
Windows XP Home Edition Retail (Full) Version
Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade Version
Windows XP Professional Retail (Full) Version
Windows XP Professional Upgrade Version

(you need another king)

MCP or not, you're still wrong. Win98 or Win98SE are both supported for
upgrades to WinXP (Home or Pro).

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for and sold with Win9x/Me
very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent hardware quality
requirements. This is particularly true of many models in Compaq's
consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion
product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective hardware (particularly motherboards,
RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

Probably just another 14-year-old troll-wannabe with a throw-away
email account. He's even posting via the CDO because he doesn't know
how to use a news reader.

You can upgrade over Win98 with an Upgrade CD - either Pro or probably
the Home version. Make sure the hardware is adequate, especially in
having more than 128MB RAM and something over 350MHz CPU, and Read Gary
Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

I don't know about the validity of this thread, but I had to put in my 2
cents worth. Many of you have seen my posts asking for advice and
assistance with various issues and all of the replies have been extremely
helpful. That is why am writing this reply.

My wife upgraded to Windows XP Pro fro Windows 98 with no problem. Her
computer never promted gave her any messages or errors. Another note on
this is that installing XP Pro fro a Win98 floppy worked easily as well.

After loading the disk, navigate to the CD ROM drove and change to the i386
directory. Ron Winnt.exe. This has proven to be a most reliable way to
install without the need for XP boot up disks, (6 of them) or in my limited
experience, trying to create a bootable CD.

Just though this might help.

Thanks for listening.
