Trying to use Netscape email with Outlook email software and would appreciate
any advice.
For example AOL can be read in Outlook and many others. But I don't think
Netsacpe works with Outlook. i'd appreciate a definitive answer as the first
thing I suspct when something doesn't work is myself.

you can download mail from servers that support the pop3 or imap protocols.
Outlook cannot download webmail unless the server supports WebDAV - only
hotmail, msn and exchange server support it.

Thanks Diane ...Your book for sale, Should I say books? Thought Netscape was
an imap protocol....servers in and out start with the words imap.*.
I guess it'e a competitive thing . But appreciate your response. JJ

Netscape is a company, not a protocol. Netscape makes web browsers
(Navigator, Mozilla, Foxfire), mail clients (Messenger, Mozilla,
Thunderbird), and other products. They also host mail services. Of course
a server name doesn't necessarily reflect its functionality. What mail
client and what type of account do you now have?

Simply put I was trying Outlook and hoped to be able to read and send email
from Outlook using the same email address ([email protected]) and have had
no luck in adding this account to the Outlook service. I have added an AOL
account.
Think my question has been addressed in the prior response from Diane but
maybe you have a workaround. Appreciate your interest. JJ

I use Netscape 7.1 with it's associated Messenger.

So click, I think, Options>Mail and News Preferences and choose the Servers
tab. What type of account is defined there? If it's POP or IMAP, you
should be able to use exactly the same server/port/username/password values
you find there for Outlook.

(imap.mail.netcenter.com )the exact ports and name and password results in
zippo. Server Type: is IMAP Mail Server. See comments above Outlook just
doesn't seem to work w/Messenger. Thx. JJ

Outlook isn't "working" with Messenger. They're both clients and both are
independent. Neither "knows" about the other and doesn't care. You have
two IMAP clients: Messenger and Outlook. If you've properly defined the
IMAP and SMTP settings in Outlook exactly as they are in Messenger, then I
don't know of any good reason wht they both wouldn't work. Are you using
the exact same username/password credentials in each? If you enable logging
in Outlook (Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options) and post the OPMLog.log
file here, maybe someone can see something.

WebDAV and IMAP are completely unrelated. You said your Messenger account
was an IMAP account. Outlook supports IMAP. Messenger can't support WebDAV
in the first place, so the message which you quote has no bearing on the
issues you've been describing.

I am sorry you did not understand that it is Webmail that I cannot seem to
get while I am using Outlook . I assume you agree there is no way to access
Webmail from Outlook. I am also sorry since I thought it used an IMAP
protocol , frankly I don't care what protocol it uses at this point. And
thankyou again for being so patient with a neophyte.

Well, you did say
Brian copying exactly outgoing server (smtp.comcast.net) and incoming
server
(imap.mail.netcenter.com )the exact ports and name and password results in
zippo. Server Type: is IMAP Mail Server.

This clearly indicates that you're not talking about webmail. Messenger
can't access webmail anyway, so if you used Messenger successfully, you
weren't using webmail. You also said you added an AOL account and the only
way to access AOL with Outlook is with IMAP.
I assume you agree there is
no way to access Webmail from Outlook.

Yes, I agree (sort of). There are free proxies available (like Hotpopper -
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/E-mail/Mail-Utilities/Hotmail-Popper.shtml)
that can allow you to read Hotmail using a POP client. There may be others
for other webmail services. It all depends on which service hosts your
mail.

Outlook can't connect to http://www.netscape.net/mymail or whatever the url
is, using the HTTP protocol - but if Netscape.net supports other protocols,
like IMAP or POP3, then you can connect to it using the mail server names.
If it's not working, then something is not configured correctly - it could
be the port #, the username format, password or authentication.

But.. outlook won;t connect to "Netscape 7" or "Mozilla" - those are
clients. You can connect to the same servers they use to access your email,
as long as you don't use an http:// url to connect to the server.
