I remember on my old system *XP* seems like you could close out of outlook
and still get a new email notification on the toolbar, i like to keep my
email open, just dont like having a window open for it. Im running Vista
currently.

Well, with Outlook (which version) you are still able to do just so. Only
thing is, with Vista comes Windows Mail, which is the successor to Outlook
*Express*, both of which never had or have this functionality.

There are tools available that can minimize any applications of your choice
to the system tray, take your pick from a Google search, f.i.:

Alternatively, if you only want to get a notification about new messages
arriving, you could use a simple POP3 check utility, requiring usually much
less system ressources than Windows Mail. Search Google or have a look here:

No and it didn't work in Outlook or Outlook Express in XP without it being a
thrid party program installed and checking mail.

If you had a Hotmail account and had Messenger running, it would notify you.
