Can Word XP (2002) open docs made in Word 2003 and vice-versa? Can this be
done without doing anything special while saving? Are any addins required?

Thanks in advance.

Brief answer is "yes."

Word 2003 may have introduced a few features that aren't in Word 2002. Those
would not work in Word 2002. However the file format is the same Word
97-Word 2003. (I think most of the changes to Word 2003 were tweaks to the
user interface and fixes of problems with Word 2002, but am not sure.)

Because I don't intentionally use new document features, I keep the option
in Tools > Options > Save to restrict to Word 97 file features checked. Hope
this helps.
