my win xp home is cycling through and never booting -- get blue screen of death - and error that suggests file "SOFTWARE" is missing

tech tips say I can use CD to start REcovery console - but my Toshiba OEM version of WIN XP does not offer that option (it says next step I'll fdo is reformat the drive!)

So, my question is can a full-blown WIN XP home disks be used to get to the recovery console of an OEM installed system?

I understand what I need to do once the recovery console is up -- is to rename the SOFTWARE filke to SOFTWARE.old and then rename the SOFTWARE.SAV to SOFTWARE and then try to reboot..

Any help is greating appreciated!!

I have OEM too..I went to start..run and typed d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
but changed the d to my drive letter c and pointed it to my i/386 folder and
installed recovery console. Maybe it will work for you.
