Microsoft senior product manager Matt Pilla said virtually all Windows XP
users will be able to download Service Pack 2, regardless of whether they
have a legal or pirated copy of the operating system. Research firm IDC
estimates that about 260 million copies have been sold.

If true, it's implications are astounding!

Perhaps at least partially true. Probable scenario: You will first download
a stub from WinUp to determine what your machine needs, but upon returning
to Win Up if the V5 engine determines it's a pirated version of WinXP, the
user will get the ol' "failed Windows logo" error.

From what I have read MS decided even the pirated versions will at least get
the Critical Updates.

So even the pirated versions will get SP2, but I wouldn't be suprised if the
installer rats you out.

Yes, I stand corrected, SP2 will be available to just about every user.

Order the Free SP2 CD

windows can ill afford having millions of computers (licensed or unlicensed)
running on the web without all the latest updates. (security issues) set to
update automatic/notify before installing. keep fingers crossed & hope for
the best.

Or the Setup (including that on the CD) assesses the system, and if
pirated installs only the critical security items, and not the other
functional upgrades
