Can the XP menu work like this?

I like to click & hold the left mouse button and slide the mouse up the
start menu to the program I want and then release the button to launch
the program. Windows 2000 and Vista work like that. But XP seems to
require another click on the program shortcut in the menu to launch. Now
I KNOW it's just a little thing, but after using XP for a couple of
years now I sure would love to have it work the way I want. Is that
possible, or is it just something hardwired into XP? Thanks.
 
What you described is the way it works so there must be something wrong with
your settings. If your menu speed is set to the slowest setting, it will
take a click to go from one menu pane to the next. For example, opening the
menu and placing the cursor on Programs will not open the next pane until
you left click on Programs. Is that what is happening with your machine?

It also works that way here so as Ron Badour siad it must be your settings.
 
Ensure that you don't have click lock turned on in your mouse settings under
control panel. It will be under the first tab, buttons, when you open up
Mouse through control panel. Let us know if this works.

Thank you people for helping. I checked click lock and is it OFF, and my
menu speed is set to the default, so they do automatically pop up/out
after about a half second delay. I am using a Microsoft Comfort Optical
3000 mouse with the correct Intellimouse drivers installed - if that has
a possible bearing on the issue. The thing is that I used to run W2K and
the menus worked with click & hold, drag to the menu item and release to
launch. And I ran Vista Home Premium for several weeks until program
incompatibility forced me back to XP, and Vista was the same. It just
seems to be XP. It's a fairly fresh install, done clean, and basically
standard programs and settings as I need it to be reliable.

I am intrigued by your statement that how I want it is standard XP
behaviour, so obviously there is something changed - but I can't think
what! Have been using Windows since the old 3.1 days, so I sort of know
the obvious things to poke at, but this one's got me beat.
