Problems began when I started travelling and using wireles accounts- no probs
before that (though connected ia ADSL router at friend's place now).
Message I get is:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Re: ', Account: 'pop.virgin.net', Server:
'smtp.virgin.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:
10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Have read therads re. antivirus stuff and disbaled this on outgoing
messages- still would not send and I got the message as above, except the
error number changed to 10060.

I can go into the virgin mail website and send and receive from tese but it
wold be much easier if I could just use my Windows mail- can anyone help?

For some antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee,
or a recent one from Trend, just disabling them is not enough - you have to
uninstall them to stop them from causing new problems. For many other
antivirus programs, just leaving email scanning disabled is enough.

This has nothing to do with your antivirus program.
For the reason why you get that error see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

Your workaround options are:
1. Use webmail for sending.
2. Use a port other than '25' for SMTP, if your mail provider
has a provision for that.
3. Use the SMTP server belonging to your current connection.
4. Get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access, and
use it for your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP,
which is not blocked.
