can RAM capacity be expanded?

Hi peter
You can upgrade ram by buying another 256mb stick and insert in pci slot in
your system.

Function of both the onboard bios capacity for recognizing memory, and
available RAM slots of the motherboard. A free RAM slot must exist, and the
bios must be able to handle the total memory involved. There's more
involved when adding a RAM module specific to each motherboard and memory
type, speed, timing capabilities, current onboard RAM and so forth. This is
a hardware question.

If you mean strictly with XP, XP has no asset to extend onboard memory
capabilities.

The available multiples are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024,
2048 and above in the years to come.
If you have available slots you can match the original 256 Megabyte Random
Access Memory with the same type.

Depending on your memory type you will still get older flavour memory of
PC100/133 Megahertz, but it is more expensive than the new stuff.
Crucial.com has a memory finder for branded computers, if not get out the
digital camera and take a photo of the original Random Access Memory and
take that to the computer reseller. Try not to disturb the original stuff.

Thank You

I would highly recommend you ignore this advice. Sticking a RAM module in a
PCI slot will definitely not help your situation at all!

Short answer, yes, unless you are using a computer that is so old that
it should be take out an shot to be put out of its misery.

Any computer built in this century has the capability of having RAM of
more than 256MB.

No, 500MB is not a choice. But assuming that you mean 512MB, read on.

The answer is that it depends--not on Windows but on your hardware. Windows
XP itself will support up to 4GB of RAM. Assuming that your motherboard
supports 512MB or more and that you have an open slot for an additional
256MB RAM module, yes you can. Unless your motherboard is an older model, it
very likely will permit you to do this.

Thank you very much to all you gents for helping me out, it is very much
appraciated.
I have rated all replies positively of course, but some comments from you
were part of someone elses message and could not be reacted to directly. I
hope this message will remedy that.
