Can PING ok, but CANNOT Browse any web sites

I think there is something wrong with my IE
installation. I know my connection to the Internet is
good because I can ping various web sites.

But when I launch IE 6 I get a long delay, and finally
a "server cannot be found" error message.

I've checked all of the IE setting and set them to the
default values, so I don't think it could be a settings
issue. I don't have a firewall, and XP's firewall is
turned off.

Any troubleshooting suggestions and/or links to relevant
web pages would be greatly appreciated.

I guess, as a last resort, I can reinstall XP. Can anyone
give me advice on how to do this as painlessly as
possible, without loosing any data and/or installed
applications.

Thanks in advance!

First and foremost, TURN ON YOUR FIREWALL!!! You do NOT want XP on the
Internet without a firewall up.

Second, you say you can ping web sites, but you do not specify if you are
pinging by IP address or by name. If you can ping by IP address but not by
name, then you have a problem with your DNS settings.

Check your network connection setting to see if your DNS server entries are
correct.

I am having the same issue with one of my users.

DNS resolves correctly.

Can ping and trace by IP or name with no problem.

Browsing by IP or name fails.

This is for all users on the PC, including administrators.

Have already done repair, roll-back, del index.dat, ran
Spybot and Norton WinDoctor.

Almost at the point of re-install.

Any addtional suggestions would be most appreciated.

Same here. Exactly the same thing. Have installed Netscape
which is not my preferred browser. Hopefully someone knows
how to resolve this as it's not a DNS error.

Please check the version of oleaut32.dll file in C:\Windows\System or
C:\Windows\System32 folder. Let me know what version you have.
