I have upgraded from a Win98 to WinXP machine on a domain
network. Ever since doing so I can no longer open
Microsoft Access databases by navigating to the folder
and opening the file by double clicking it. I have to
open it by launching access and then navigating through
the open command. When I try to launch Access by opening
the file it prompts me to insert the Office CDs but
cannot do what it needs to do because of insufficient
privileges.

Any one knows what is going on and how to correct it?

You have several problems.

1. The first is that there must be either unattention to detail, or purpose
that you have not been given rights to install on your machine. Ask your
domain admin. You either need to be a local machine admin, or he/she will
need to reinstall office. You can also have local admin rights added to your
account.

2. You need to reinstall Office, as an admin, or re-register all the Office
apps. IMHO, it's easier to install. To do so, you'll need to take care of #1
first.

When office was originally installed it was done as
domain administrator. All components were installed
locally to the machine too. I have tried inserting the CD
and logging in with Administrator rights when it prompts
me to but this never seems to resolve.

A complete uninstall and reinstall hasn't solved this
either.

1. Log in as an admin
2. Go to control panel
3. Choose Administrative Tools
4. Choose Computer Management
5. Choose Local Users and Groups
6. Choose Users
7. Find your account and right-click on it
8. Choose Properties
9. Choose the Member Of tab
10. Add the Administrators group or Local Administrators

Reinstall as yourself.

Will the user settings need to be changed on the local
machine or the server for this? We log onto a domain.

Well after making all those changes to both the local
machine and reinstalling, then the server user
permissions and reinstalling again it still has the same
problem.

I have created a new user account and it has the same
problem opening access.
