can only start Word in a safe mode. Why?

I Have MS Office Pro 2003. I just installed it & also upgraded windows XP
with the SP2 patch. When I try to start word it says there is an error &
will only start in a safe mode. I tried both repair & deleting &
reinstalling. Any ideas??

Access & the other programs work fine.
