I can only boot up in safe mode with networking. I am using media center 2005
and until yesterday, it was operating fine. I am completely lost and DELL is
useless! I can't even reinstall my norton!! Please help me, thanks in advance.

Hi,

What's changed since yesterday? What do you suspect and why? Don't worry
about Nortons at the moment.

I believe I downloaded something and it took over my operating system. I
haven't a clue what though. I have tried system restore @ various points and
no luck! Any suggestions?

Hi,

Checked through Add & Remove yet?
Run a diagnostic startup (start/run msconfig and check the first tab)?

It certainly sounds like you picked up something nasty. It is common for
viruses to disable antivirus programs, particularly if you had an older
version of Norton and/or had let your subscription lapse.

Start by going through the preparatory cleanup steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Then run either Sysclean or David Lipman's Multi-AV:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#TrendMicros_Sysclean
http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm - how to use Dave Lipman's Multi-AV
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe - Multi-AV download

After the initial scan with one of those tools, update your Norton and
do a thorough scan in Safe Mode. Finish up by going through the general
malware removal steps from the first link.

If the process seems daunting - and there is no shame in admitting this
- take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your
local version of BigStoreUSA).

Next time dont install viruses or trojans or spyware or malware. It's
all up to you.

Plato please don't be rude, I have encountered a problem and am asking for
help. I really do not need to be told not to download viruse and such.
