Can OEM version of XP Pro be reinstalled w/o wiping out apps

I tried to install SP2 on WinXP Pro twice. Both times the install
seemed to get almost to completion when I receive an error message and
clicked the button to roll back or uninstall SP2.

I wonder if the problem is a corruption in one or more of the XP Pro
files and would like to reinstall XP Pro. Unfortunately, it’s an OEM
rather than Upgrade version. Is there a way to reinstall WinXP Pro so
that it checks and/or repairs XP files (somewhat like an upgrade does)
without wiping and reinstalling the entire OS. This is certainly
preferable, as I don’t really want to reinstall all of my software and
then hope that I backed up ALL of my data (incl favorites, Outlook
.pst files, etc).

Thanks,

S

Hi,

By OEM, do you mean this is a preinstalled system that only came with a set
of recovery disks (if that)? Or that this is a generic OEM disk that is
basically like the retail disk.

The latter can be used to do a repair installation, see:

For the former, you will need to check with the system manufacturers to see
what your options are.
