The following recipient(s) could not be reached - 550 Authentication turned
on in your email client. Get this error some of the time. Have changed email
servers and this still happens. Problem must be in my Outlook (2003).

Configure your account in Outlook to *authenticate* to your SMTP server.

This only happens to about 1 out of 20 emails. At this time authentication is
turned off. I do not need authentication turned on for the out going SMTP
server.

Your choice to endure the aggravation one in twenty times. The common
solutions for your problem are: authenticate to the SMTP server (this
eliminates the expiration of your login credentials that are retried
from your POP3 connect), and disable e-mail scanning by your anti-virus
software. But, hey, if you don't want to try these and leave it the way
it is, go for it.

When I turn on outgoing authentication nothing gets out. The Antivirus
software has been completely turned off. Any other suggestions.

What is the error message? You should be either configuring to reuse
the POP3 login credential (if the SMTP server is a mail server from the
same e-mail provider as the POP3 server) or specifying the login
credentials separately (which I do even if the SMTP and POP3 server are
from the same e-mail provider). What e-mail provider are you using for
POP3 service, and which one do you use for SMTP service?

This does not happen all of the time but offen enough to be a pain. I have
used 3 different email servers (POP3 and SMTP). All POP3 requires
authentication. One SMTP required authentication. When using the same POP3
and SMTP authenication is on for both. When using a different SMTP outgoing
authenication is turned off. It does not make any difference what SMTP is
used I will have the problem. If this is an Outlook (Microsoft) problem I'll
just switch to a different email program. If not an Outlook problem then
changing email software would be a waste of time.
