Can not send email from MS Outlook 2003 when in hotels/on the road

When I am in a hotel that offers broadband service, which I have when at
home, I can connect to the internet, bring up my Outlook and receive email,
but get an administrative email back that tells me that "550, relaying email
to <whatever address I tried to send to> is not allowed. I get the same
error regardless of the email address I try to send to. I know it is not the
address, because it is another email address that I have. Is there a problem
with Outlook in this type of scenario. That is what my Cox Cable Support rep
told me.

Probably the issue is that Cox won't let you send from an IP address that
doesn't belong to them. A lot of ISPs do that in order to deter spam. It's
not an Outlook issue, but rather an issue that you're connecting from
somebody else's network.

You might call Cox back, try and get a rep who knows about this stuff, and
see if they have a workaround for you.

Ben, Thanks for the feedback. I'll giv eme Cox rep another call. They all
tend to have the attitude that its not a Cox problem, but always someone
elses problem.

RoadRunner does the same thing (at least in Hawaii). For our clients who
insist upon checking their RoadRunner mail from the office (with a
non-RoadRunner connection) we have to route their outbound RoadRunner mail
thru their office SMTP server since RoadRunner won't accept it.
