I click on the user accounts and it tells me that the file name, dicectory
name or volume label syntax is incorrect. It all started with a suspicous
scripting activity. The file name is mshta.exe. Please help me, I am ready
to rip out my hair over this problem. Been looking for a couple of days now
for the fix. Thanks to who ever helps. Using xp pro

mshta.exe is a legit process in Windows XP; it launches most of the applets
(User Accounts being the one). From previous newsgroup posts, this problem
may occur if you have a HTA blocker installed. HTA blocker may be a part of
your anti-virus package or a separate application like HTA Stop. Perform a
clean boot, thereby closing all the background tasks (including Anti-virus
services) and try to open the User Accounts applet.

Additionally, see if this command helps:

mshta "res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\nusrmgr.cpl/nusrmgr.hta"
-or-
mshta.exe "res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\nusrmgr.cpl/nusrmgr.hta"

Change the drive-letter if Windows is installed in a different drive. If
nothing helps, post the exact error message you see while opening the User
accounts applet.

Hi

I have a simular problem with one of my Dutch clients. I recently
removed around 40 virus's from her computer and added SpyBot S & D.
Now I can't access the User Accounts from the Control Panel. There are
no error messages, the egg timer appears for a second then normal. No
response at all.

When using IE to surf, most sites active an XP password dialog. I am
also unable to access Task Manager, apparently the Administrator has
removed that ability. But again I can't edit user accounts. It may all
be connected to virus damage. Would SFC be appropriate?

I will try your suggestions below and I will also disable SpyBot and
any firewalls, is there anything else you can suggest?

Many Thanks for your help

Ramesh,

an update...

Problem with the User Accounts was that the MSHTA file was missing,
once I replaced it, I could access the accounts.

However, I still can't get the Task Manager, still get the message
,'this has been disabled by the administrator' or words to that
effect. I went in as Admin and right clicked the task bar and found an
option for the task manager but it did not seem to work. Any thoughts?

SFC helped a little but nothing major. The system is still suffering
various problems, as reported in the event log, such as error 7011 and
1005.

Any to cap it all the machine is now infected by Blazefind.

I am starting to wonder if I should simply reinstall the damm thing!
Only I dont think the client has all her software on disk!

Anyway, any thoughts would be appriciated!

Thanks

Bob,
Glad you got the User account issue resolved. For the Task Manager
restrictions see, Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Taskmanager_error.htm

BTW, fully updated reference for Ad-aware should be enough to remove
BlazeFind. In addition, the following information may help:

Quick Launch settings are not saved; Search Assistant Toolbar in Taskbar:

Ramesh,

Your enable TM reg file did the trick, thanks for that. However, I
still have more problems than I have time for....!!!!!

Cant shift blazefind even though SpyBot S&D 1.3 removed it three
times. Still getting a password request for most websites visited. Why
is that??? Is it IE6 being too sensitive?

I have one question which I am sure is obvious to all (so please
excuse me!), do I really have to run Spyware and virus checks on each
and every indivudal account on a XP machine? My client has 3 accounts
pn her XP machine. Could some of my problems be related to the fact
that each account is seperatly infected (Spyware etc...) and cross
infecting each other??

Bob

PS I had a good time reading and playing with LeakTest, a rather
interesting program!

Bob,

It's not mandatory to run spyware cleaners in each user account. The main
objective would be to eliminate the malware files and their GUID entries
(the source) which Ad-aware or SpyBot does it perfectly. Next step is to
inspect the startup entries for each user profile. Autoruns from
www.sysinternals.com would be helpful.
