I was trying to put a shortcut to "My Computer" on the desktop. Instead, I
think I put something close to the real thing (no little arrow thingy and
when I select Left_Mouse->Properties I get the System_Properties window (no
window with a 'shortcut tab' and 'Target' information). I also can not move
the 'My Computer" icon anywhere (e.g., to another directory).

How do I get this thing off the desktop without buggering up the system?

(details: WindowsXP/Home, HP Pavilion, P4 1.6 GHz, ...).

Thanks.

delete that icon and goto start and right clickj my computer on the start

To me, looks like you have My Network Place in your
desktop. Even if it isn't, follow this step.

Right click on Desktop->Properties->Desktop tab->on the
bottom left, there should be a "Customize Desktop"
button, click it->upper frame, there are check boxes with
name of desktop icons such as Recycle bin, My network
places, my computer and such. Check off what you are
trying to erase.

Hopefully your problem was solved :)
