Can not install XP2

I have XP home - fully updated for all the patches until
SP2. I have tried installing SP2 at least twenty times
using many available options like automatic update,
express/custom install etc. Each time, the update website
registers SP2 as the update my XP has not yet done. On
clicking the install button, it brings up the usual
certificate where I click "I accept". At the click, a
window opens up with "The updates are being downloaded
and installed." title. And, the download just does not
begin. After about a couple of minutes, it stops
with "Updates were unable to be successfully installed"
error message. No other reasons given. Please help.
Should I use a .exe file directly which is available at
http://www.softpedia.com/public/scripts/downloadhero/13-9-
177? Is this link genuine?

Thanks Vikas. A few follow-up questions/replies:

1> I do not see any error code. Just a simple window on
accepting terms cancelling the download with "Updates
were unable to be successfully installed". Is there any
place on my machine where I should be looking for errors?

2> I have a home PC. The link you've sent me advises
against direct download of the file for non-network PC.
Should I still go ahead?

3> My machine has long been running a problem that I have
tried to solve without success and may be this is linked
to the problem now. My machine can not run scheduled
tasks. I can schedule tasks like daily live update of
Norton AV but the task never starts. Related is the fact
that I can not run defrag. A defrag attempt simply comes
up with the error that it can not run two instances - I
can not find the first "defrag" instance anywhere in my
processes.

Hope this helps and look forward to your replies.

Cheers

I went to the link and downloaded the file successfully.
It was decompressed for about 5-10mins. Then, the machine
started installing. Worked for about 10+mins and the
installation halted with an abrupt "The specific service
module could not be found" (or something similar) error
message. What do I do? I have Norton AV and my machine as
per NAV is good. I have checked the machine with adaware
and spybot. All programs are up-to-date. As I wrote in
another mail, I have a long running problem with task
scheduler and defrag. For those probs, I have tried many
solns including safe boot, clean boot etc but never
figured what's wrong? (the task scheduler and defrag
worked on this machine for the first few months, but
somewhere they crashed). Is the current problem linked to
this? What should I do?

you can dowload and install SP2 to single PC as well. I have read lots of
posts from these newsgroups where users have specified that they have
installed downloaded SP2 to single machine.

Additionally, you can following the recommendations from another users.
1: Made sure I had all the latest drivers for my peripherals
2: Made sure I had all available updates for my software
3: Did a thorough disk cleanup
4: Did a thorough virus scan
5: Did a thorough adware scan with Ad Aware and Spybot
6: Imaged my hard drive using Powerquest Drive Image
7: Installed SP2 - stand alone network install.
8: Did a complete defrag of my system partition

Thanks. I had taken almost everything suggested before
trying to install. Tried installing with Norton disabled
as well. I still can not download SP2 and I guess it is
linked to my other problems. Let me explain my problems
in more details:

As I said earlier, when I try to install XP SP2 from
automatic update, the download simply does not begin.
Once I accept the terms, the usual download block opens
and does nothing. After about 5 mins, it stops with the
message "Updates were unable to be successfully installed"

On the suggestion here, I tried installing it by directly
downloading the SP2 exe file. On completing the download,
the files were successfully decompressed. The install
process looked for the config and after about 10-15mins
into the installation it stopped with the message "The
specific service module could not be found" similar to
error 126 I have seen earlier on my machine. So, now
let's take the story back a bit...

I've this problem for a long time (more than a year). My
task scheduler does not start. It is configured to start
at the start-up, but it does not. I have tried starting
it from component services etc. It stops with Error 126:
The specific module could not be found.

Since the task scheduler problem about ayear ago, I also
have problem with the defrag. I can not run disk defrag.
It comes with the message that defrag can not run on more
than one instance. I can not find any other instance of
defrag running anywhere on my comp.

Looks like all this is connected. Please help. Likely
these problems started with either my installation of the
additional maxtor drive last year or installation of
Norton Systemworks or some other application. I did not
face issue with previous XP updates. I had learnt to live
without defrag and scheduler, but looks like now it is a
problem that has to be resolved.

Your help is much appreciated

Nilesh
