By midstake, I downloaded an application program which
run the cacc.exe to automatically open Windows Media
Player when the PC is started.

Later on, I found out this is a hide file in the
Application Data folder. Trying to delete this file
showed a message of 'access denied.' Checking the
properties of the file showed the file is not read-only.

I guessed reason is because the cacc.exe is running. How
can I stop it and then delete it?

Thanks in advance.

Jeffrey

Hey Jeff,
Have you tried to delete cookies and files and history
from the Internet explorer>tools>internet options?
try as some times the root of such issues are that their
cookies are stored in the system which when you try to
delete a file related to it gives error "access denied"
or "file is use by another application"

Hi Vidhi:

As you said in your e-mail, I deleted the cookies but
sill con not delete the cacc.exe file. I just completely
blocked it. Restart the PC again, I did not see the
message again, but the Windows Media Playere was still
opening automatically. Does cacc.exe has anything to do
with opening the WMP?

Thanks.

Jeffrey;
Ctrl + Alt + Del/Processes tab/highlight cacc.exe/End Task.
Start/Run/type: msconfig /OK/Startup tab/find cacc.exe and uncheck it.
Now try to delete it.

It is known as Scumware. 1), 2) and 3) are good. Visit these sites. Download
and install, run one or all. They are all good, FREE utilities. The first
site gives some recommendations.

Wes:

Thanks for your information. Following your first two
instructions, I have stopped cacc.exe.

I have already downloaded and installed Spybot S&D to my
PC. Maybe I have not upgraded it for a while, therefore
cacc.exe was not stopped/deleted when it attacked my PC.
Anyway, I upgraded it and run it again. I did not notice
the cacc.exe in the files deleted by Spybot S&D.

After restarting my PC, the Windows Media Player was
still opening. Checking my Application Data directory
where I found the cacc.exe file before, the file is
gone.

Therefore, my question is: WMP was running because
cacc.exe is still in my PC, or WMP's automatic starting
up has nothing to do with cacc.exe, then what causes the
WMP's auto starting up?

Thanks,
Jeffrey

Jeffrey;
You're welcome. With any program you have like Spybot, anti-virus, etc.
you need to update often. I guess you see the reason for this. :-)
As far as Windows Media Player starting at bootup, try this:
Start/Run/type: msconfig (or copy and paste)/OK/click the Startup tab/What is
listed there? Anything that may be related to WMP?
Open WMP/Tools/Options/Player tab/Automatic updates, Is once a day checked?
If it is, UNcheck it/Apply/OK.
Go here and download, install and run StartMan:
http://www.pt.lu/comnet/desc/startman.html
Read the description then download. I use this program all the time.
Click the Blue: StartMan v1.3.96 at the top.
Post back right here with what you find.

Wes:

Thanks again. I downloaded and installed the PCForrest
StartMan. Immediately, I found out the cacc.exe was
orphaned and WMPlayer was in the Startup list. I removed
cacc.exe and other orphaned.

Now I have a clean starting up.

Thanks,
Jeffrey

Jeffrey;
You betcha!
Remember when you add new programs, run StartMan to see if they want to
start automatically. If so StartMan shows where they start from. A lot of
times from the Registry. i.e.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
There are twelve locations they can be started from.
Wes
A question. Do you remember where WMP was starting from? Was it
C:\Documents and Settings\your name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup ?
Let me know, I am curious.
