Can not connect to my wireless router

I live in Mexico and went to Laredo TX to buy a brand new Sony notebook
VGN-FE880E with Vista OS. My router is a "2wire" Prodigy Infinitum device. My
desktop and old Compaq (wireless 3Com external card) with MS2000 work fine
but it is imposible to connect my new Vista laptop..Cable ok but not wifi.
I can connect to router but not to internet.
I was expecting that this wifi connection was going to be easy after many
months of testing by MS but it looks that MS confirms his reputation..again.
Maybe I should have bought an Apple computer.
I found MANY complaints about this matter in internet. Different computers
and routers and county. I really believe it's Vista failing in this important
aspect of wifi.
Any advise or future patches for Vista that fixes this huge problem.
I spent big bucks for an invalid Sony Viao..
Regards.

I had exactly the same problem. Unfortunately, as I discovered, you have
just 2 choices:

1. Wait for MS fixes that may appear in a year or so.
2. Purchase a full version of XP Home or XP Pro ($200 to $300), reformat
your hard drive, then install XP.

Why won't the retailer offer a free exchange of your released-too-early copy
of Vista for a copy of XP? I don't know, they just won't. I am appalled that
there are so few new computers available these days that come with anything
other than Vista. Guess my computer purchases will be put on hold for a
while. Could a new Microsoft OS be on the horizon? Look for Vienna (formerly
called Blackcomb).

No problem with wifi here. Dell D620 laptop. Works like a charm. Sounds like
a (Non-MS) driver issue.

Of course. And the driver was installed by computer manufacturers who have
also installed Vista. That doesn't make it less of a problem, and don't
expect the manufacturer or the retailer to offer any help - other than to
tell you to wait for Vista SP 1.

That's why it is always wise to wait for a year or so before using a newly
released operating system.

Well, I agree that one must know what one is getting into prior to jumping
into the Vista pool. For some it will be a smooth transition. For others,
yes, they should wait until SP1, or SP2 more likely. My main point is that
Vista works if your hw drivers work. If your drivers suck, well, blaming MS
and saying Vista Sucks isn't really addressing the issue of poorly coded
third party drivers.
