i. Ive had a problem with a secondary hard drive, which in
turn has effected my main, installed XP drive. When it
boots up the screen says there is a problem with the
installation and needs to repair the files. Not a problem,
as I have the install disk (upgrade version) . However, it
goes through the screens and gives me the choice of
repairing or re installing. if I do a repair, it does not
seem to repair all the files, so on the reboot it keeps
coming up with another file missing and "use the R option
on the first screen". I keep going through this with no
avail. So I thought I would use a full reinstall. Again,
follow the options, but when it starts to get down to it
the system tells me that it may delete the My Documents
folder. This I can not do, as my backups were on the
destroyed hard disk!. So the thought accoured to me that i
can use the recovery console to take a copy of the
documents and setting folder to anothe part of the hard
disk. recovery console works, but when I try to change
into the documents and setting folder in C:\ it
says "Access is Denied" even though I am logged on as the
administrator. Any ideas?

A 2nd hd should have no effect on C: drive booting up,were both
drives connected when xp was applied, only the master,to be C: should
be at that time.Does C: have a primary partition,if the slave was connected
you should reinstall xp.For the recovery cmds type:314058 at microsoft,it
lists the chdir options.

It seems you're suffering the consequences of breaking
the iron rule of computing: Back up all important files every
week to an independent medium.

To access your folders via the Recovery Console, you must
set the appropriate systems policy while WinXP is up and
running:
- Run gpedit.msc
- Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Windows Settings /
Security Settings /
Security Options / Recovery Console: Allow floppy disk access . . .
- Set this policy to "Enabled".

If you can no longer start WinXP then you have some other
options:
- Install your disk as a slave disk in some other WinXP/2000
PC, then copy the files across.
- Boot the machine with a Bart WinXP PE CD, then copy the
files across.
You can download the tools for a Bart CD from www.bootdisk.com.
To make the CD, you need a WinXP Professional CD (but no
licence number!) and a CD burner.
