Just one 60m $ question. Can IMAPI service be
disabled, to use InCD?
another question - Can standard burning solutions be used
without IMAPI enabled?

Yes. InCD nor Nero use the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service. XP's CD burning
uses the service.

I have both InCd and Nero and have the service disabled.

I do not understand the question. XP's CD burning will not work with it
disabled.

Better stated. And I believe that Third party burning
programs probably could still function without the IMAPI
service enabled, but the way the description was written I
thought i'd better write and ask. The IMAPPI does NOT get
along with InCD 5 (nor 4 for that matter).
The InCD, when installed, causes explorer to bomb on
startup. I cannot use CD-DVD 2 way without this as windows
Writer wizard only allows write to (not replace) of files,
and read from files (no delete allowed). Erase cannot be
done as the disc is made with the readonly bit set at time
of write. - At least this is true on my PC.
I use the following CD/DVD software Nero 7.5 Ultra, Helium 2
2006.1, ACDsee 8, RealPlayer 10.5
RealPlayer uses Roxio/sonic as does ACDsee 8. Helium uses
NTI, Windows uses roxio engine under imapi custom application.

Could one of the media managers have an incompatible burn
engine?

I have InCD 3.2.7.1 and Nero 5.5.8.0.

InCD.exe was set to start at boot. I disabled that. Been so long ago that
I can't remember where it was set to start from, the registry I think. I
just created a shortcut to C:\Program Files\ahead\InCD\InCD.exe to start it
only when needed.

I found this at CasleCops...
incd.exe
Ahead_InCD packet writing software. Similar to DirectCD. - For Nero 5.0 or
5.5 (InCD3), it does not need to start with Windows. You can run InCD.exe
manually before inserting an appropriately formatted CD-RW (CD-MRW) disk. -
For Nero 6.0, 6.3 or 6.6 (InCD4), it does need to start with Windows. It
does not function correctly when you try to run it manually, and you will
not have write access to MRW (Mount Rainier) formatted CD-RW (CD-MRW) or
DVD-MRW disks. To regain write access and other features, InCD 4 must start
with Windows.

Another tip from a NERO readme...
[[Go to your Windows Explorer or My Computer and right click on your
Recorders drive letter, and then go to the "Recorder" Tab and in that window
disable the option for "Enable Recording on this Drive".]]
