I have won XPpro in a Raffle. At present I am running windows 98se and I
would like to Use the Xp Cd and Install Xppro. As my Computer is all set up
and and I dont want to lose any of my programs and settings I would rather
tackle a Upgrade than a clean Installation of Windows XP. My Computer has
the correct specs to handle Xp. Its Just that I dont want to lose my
settings and programs that I have at the moment and I Just wouldnt like to
go through all the hassle of trying to start from scratch again.. so if
anyone has done it and knows the secrets its much appreciated.

Thanks

As far as i know if you choose the upgrade option, this should keep your
previous settings intact. I would do a full backup first to be on the safe
side.

Yes you can upgrade from 98, but do a compatability check
first which can be run directly from the XP disk, then
follow any recommendations made from that check. XP is
very picky/sensitive when it comes to older
hardware/programs/drivers.

The answer is yes if it is the retail version. However, your big concern is
probably that you need to check the compatibility of your machine before
upgrading. If it is old enough to have come with Windows 98, it might not
be up to the task.

As it is adequate, you can use the CD to install. But the 'recommended'
specs are thin; in particular if you have only the recommended 128MB RAM
I would try to install some more. Even another 64 would make a
difference, but realistically try to get to 256. Then Read Gary
Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at

Yes, you can upgrade if what you won is a retail CD (Full or
Upgrade version). No, you can't upgrade if what you won is an OEM
version (which many people confuse with the Full version, so be
careful).

There are no secrets, so just do it. Be aware that there are no
guarantees that it always works perfectly. However unlikely, it's
always possible that something might go wrong. For that reason
it's prudent to be sure you have a backup of anything you can't
afford to lose before beginning.

Also make your computer has enough power for XP. Regardless of
the official minimums, I wouldn't do it unless you have at least
a 400MHz processor, 256MB of RAM, and a 10GB hard drive.

Ignore what "Mark" said. What a maroon! If you are sure that your
computer meets/exceeds the hardware specs for XP you can upgrade. Make
sure you don't have any software installed that would cause a conflict,
like earlier version of Easy CD Creator. The XP cd has Upgrade Advisor
on it and you can run that from within Win98 to make sure everything is
OK. Unplug any peripherals like printers, cameras, scanners, etc. and
reboot with the XP cd (you may need to change your computer's boot
order in the BIOS first).

However, do not count on having no problems. The upgrade might go
beautifully, or it might not. There is no substitute for a current
backup of your data.

Go for it. You probably won't have any major problems.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things
can go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all
important to you, back it up before proceeding.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and *hard drives*) that will
still support Win9x.

Don't bother listening to this response below!

XP is far superior to Win98. As long as your system will handle it, I don't
think you will be dissapointed.

Run the upgrade advisor included on the XP cd rom first, too see if you have
any hardware/programs that might cause you trouble. Updated your drivers for
your peripherals to the latest.
Backup any important data files you do not want to lose in case something
does go astray.

With the proper precaution, you will be fine.
